Blackbox gives back control to Karl and his VE Commodore HSV GTS

Here’s some recent feedback from Karl B about his experience with eEMOTIV.com Blackbox and his my supercharged 2007 Holden Commodore VE HSV GTS.

I have recently had Eemotiv’s Blackbox BB01 installed in my 2007 Holden Commodore VE HSV GTS (Supercharged).

I find the Eemotiv Blackbox simple to use scrolling quickly and easily between OEM Mode, Active Mode and Tuning Mode. Depending on the driving conditions I am faced with (e.g. road vs. track, dry vs. wet, long sweeping vs. tight twisting, etc) I can program and select an almost infinite range of settings to dial in exactly the amount of oversteer or understeer I want and to what extent I want the BB01 to interface with or override the car’s electronic stability controls.

I was able to give the BB01 an exhaustive test at a 2 Day Race Advanced Driver and Race Training session at Oran Park recently and found it invaluable particularly on a wet and greasy track after a sudden downpour. The BB01 gave me a great deal of flexibility and added confidence in how I attacked the circuit. I was able to get on the power earlier coming out of corners with the knowledge and comfort that if the car started to understeer or oversteer the Blackbox would correct it while still delivering power to the rear wheels.

I can highly recommend the Eemotiv Blackbox BB01.

Taking back control in the Commodore VE

Wayne Boatwright takes back control and tests the Blackbox V1.1 on the Commodore VE at Wakefield Park. Watch while Wayne uses live Active Tuning mode while driving to tune the amount of intervention and handling bias. Hear his commentary and see how easy it is to change the handling bias of the car and amount of ESP intervention.

Blackbox on Subaru – NASIOC forum questions

Some answers to recent forum questions

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1491194&page=2

ESP, DSC is an extension of ABS and therefore uses a lot of the same hardware and sensors.  Refer http://eemotiv.com/news/technical/dsc-esc-esp-tc-vdc-vsc-what-da/ for more background along with http://www.slideshare.net/eEMOTIV/eemotivcom-and-blackbox-hbm-stability-control-tuning

We work with the ABS system as part of ESP tuning but we don’t touch the ABS functionality. However, only Blackbox actually lets you tune out the factory ESP intervention without turning off or losing ABS (fuse pull). Its all about working with the ESP not against it or assuming that its worthless like some did with early ABS.

Yes, the Blackbox makes it easier and more functional to work with factory ESP systems to deliver trail braking and tuned attitude changes, refer the “sling-shot” we talked about and experienced on the track. Go for later intervention (less stock), slow in then nail it on the way out knowing the Blackbox will “sling-shot” you out past the apex.

Understand the point about ABS and street use but it is important to note that its actually now used extensively in racing but “…it’s not ABS as we know it Jim…” with some very cool algorithms and tuning to deliver a very different outcome to road cars. That said, we can therefore generalise that street ABS is more about safety and stability where as race ABS is about speed and guess what applies to ESP? J

As for sensitivity and frequency capability of stock sensors, for street, tarmac rally, or other related motorsport we have yet to see a problem resulting from this as most systems are capable of operating at 100Hz which is ample. But, we see a very clear outcomes path from early ESP systems to current versions with cars like the current BMW 330 using intervention that is almost imperceptible.

…and remember, we have yet to test a vehicle where you can actually TURN OFF the stock system. That’s right, regardless of what the manual says or dashboard button claims to do, it’s still intervening albeit at a lighter duty cycle and with higher limits.

Cheers
